For actual beach vacations, most Houstonians travel to the Florida or Mexico coasts.

Houston and Florida humidity are remarkably similar — both average 75-80% relative humidity in summer. Houston may feel slightly more oppressive because the metro area is inland enough that Gulf breezes are less consistent than coastal Florida cities. The heat index in both locations regularly exceeds 105°F in July and August. If you are comfortable in Florida's summer, you will handle Houston's summer just fine. Air conditioning is equally ubiquitous in both locations.

Houston offers several career advantages over Florida metros: higher average salaries (especially in engineering, healthcare, and corporate roles), more Fortune 500 headquarters (26 vs Florida's 18 statewide), the world's largest medical center (120,000+ jobs), and the energy sector's global headquarters. Florida's strengths in tourism, hospitality, and real estate are not as replicated in Houston. For professionals in STEM, healthcare, legal, or corporate fields, Houston typically offers better compensation and faster career advancement.
